August 13 Jersey GirlI am a Jersey Girl...no matter where I have moved, I never quite feel like I belong, I see that even though it's the same country, there really are different cultures within the same country...I am living in North Carolina and it really is different...I am going to try to express that difference in my upcoming blogs, unless of course I get bored and change my mind, so don't hold me to it...I feel a connection to other people from Jersey, no matter where we find ourselves...there is something that connects us...I dont know how to explain it, so I will try to find things to put here so I can figure it out...kind of an anthropological study of New Jersey Culture....I hope it will be a fun project...I guess I am a little homesick right now, I havent been home in almost six years...but no matter where I am ....I am from New Jersey...I am a Jersey girl and proud of it...so, let's disect this thing and see what we find....

June 30 Blog or Blahg...you decide...I am just beginning to visit spaces and leave notes. I was never into the spaces or into blogging or journaling, but I am starting to have a desire to do it. There are some very nice spaces out there and maybe I should work to put a little more of myself into my space. But, I don't quite know where to begin.
I will start by saying my name is Jo Ann, but I now go by Jo. Some close buddies call me JoJo. It is all good. The spelling of my name was after a doll. I like how it is spelled and wow, if I keep at this, I will have the most boring blog in the world...just call it a blahg...
I grew up in New Jersey. Not far from the bridges that lead to Philadelphia. I grew up in a nice, relatively quiet suburban neighborhood. My father moved us out of the city (Allentown, PA) to the suburbs, so my sister and I could grow up without the problems that come with city life.
I always wanted to live in the city and never appreciated what he was trying to do. I do now that I am a mother of two girls. But, I wanted the excitement and interaction of city living. I wanted to see the real world, with all the different races and ethnicities and religions.
So at 20 years old, I decided to head off to New York City to attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I was finally going to enjoy big city living. My poor dad, he was a nervous wreck, but I soon found a wonderful police officer friend, who adopted me as his little sister and he took good care of me. I have some great stories about him, but maybe at a later time.
New York was wonderful. I spent a total of six years there and lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. I loved the experiences and education, especially the life education that I received there. New York really is the melting pot. I got to know many wonderful people from all walks of life and I am so happy that I had that experience to expand my horizons. I am a better and more understanding and tolerant person for it. I get upset when I see how people respond to people of other backgrounds, but then I have to realize, maybe they have never had the opportunity to really rub elboes with people from different walks of life. So, they stay in a state of small mindedness and afraid of the stereotypes. I am glad I rid myself of that demon early on in my adulthood. I now raise my children to be tolerant and loving and accepting of all peoples. They know that we don't judge people based on things that they have no control over. They are more likely to be tolerant as they are half hispanic, but still. I want them to be tolerant of all races, ethnicities and religions. People are people and at the end of the day, we have the same needs. There is therefore, no reason to hate somebody based on race, ethnicity or religion.
